Tourism, Travel
and Transport: The Island of Cozumel, Mexican Caribbean February 18 - 20, 2004 According to the World Trade Organization (WTO) the year 2002 was a landmark year for tourism in that 714.6 million international tourist arrivals were registered worldwide, surpassing the previous record number of 700 million. This marks tourism as one of the most dynamic economic activities in the global environment. As long recognized by international organizations such as Programs of the United Nations for the Environment and for Development (UNEP and UNDP), the Commission for the Environmental Cooperation of North America (CECNA) and the Institute of the World Resources (WRI), among others, tourist activities create both activities and challenges. Tourism generates economic benefits, but also requires mobilization of resources, large-scale investments, human mobilization, the creation of new infrastructure and the growth of the sector transports - all of which imply ecological, social, cultural and economic impacts. The Society for Human Ecology (SHE) is a broad interdisciplinary organization, concerned with research and education in issues from International Development to Philosophy and Theory of human and environmental sustainability, ranging from the individual scale to the world scale. In the SHE XII conference we will explore tourism in its complexity, with the purpose of generating alternatives and proposals to respond to the contradictions generated by tourism in societies and ecosystems both on local and regional scales. The concerns of Human Ecology are distinctly interdisciplinary and transnational. New ideas from one discipline enrich, and are enriched by, discussions with other disciplines.
